The surface of Lake Leman, reflecting on the north the sloping vineyards of the canton of Vaud, and on the south the chestnut groves and pastures of Savoy, is 1220 ft above the level of the sea. Its area of 224 sq. miles makes it the largest lake in Switzerland, while the Rhone, descending from the Valais, furnishes it with 70 % of its water, drawn from a surface of many hundreds of square miles of glaciers and snow. Yet Lake Leman itself never freezes except in certain small, very restricted areas. Consequently there is a fairly southern type of climate on its shores, and the powerful radiations from its surface in autumn help ripen the grapes in the vineyards. This is one important reason why in this countryside all other crops have been sacrificed to the vine. Along the lakeside between Geneva and Lausanne lie charming villages and lovely country estates. Several of the villages, such as Nyon, Rolle and Morges, have their own castles and any one of them provides an ideal setting for a quiet and restful vacation.
